Auschwitz and Berkenau
There is nothing I could possibly write here which would explain the feeling of walking across the grounds of Auschwitz and Berkenau. I can only say that the whole experience was surreal and I felt numb and chills ran through my body during my time there. I am sure it will take weeks and even months to process what I saw but the important part is that I was there and that the tours that are given show the atrocities that were committed a mere 62 years ago. History tends to repeat itself. I posted before about how Jews were expelled from Spain in the 1400's during the Spanish inquisition and I am sure that the Nazis will certainly not be the last people to persecute Jews. But the genocide the Nazis committed can be prevented. So it is crucial that as many people visit these grounds as possible to remember what happened and not let history repeat itself. There are those that say the Holocaust never happened. To those I say, please visit the concetration camps. Walk the grounds, visit the barracks, look at the suitcases, the shoes, the hair which was collected. Look at the empty cans of gas, the gas chambers, the empty expressions on the many faces who died there. It is heartbreaking. And the Jews were not the only victims though 90% of Auchwitz victims were Jews. How could this happen so recently in world history? The answer is too scary to ponder.

I thought the same thing when I went to S-21 and the Killing Fields in Cambodia - a more modern version of the Holocaust.
